• ChatGPT Cheat Sheet - AI-based chatbots in teaching - II

Find out everything you need to know about using AI-based chatbots in teaching and how they can enrich the learning process on this cheat sheet.

    Impact of AI in teaching

AI can have both positive and negative effects. While AI tools such as ChatGPT can probably replace human writing in some industries, they play a supporting role in other areas, such as higher education. Because human contact is and remains essential in teaching.

Uniqueness and novelty of the texts

ChatGPT has been trained with an enormous amount of data, which means that the software's answers usually seem novel and do not contain significant repetitions of existing texts. However, there may be certain subject areas where there are few original text sources. In such cases, the answers may have a lower degree of novelty.

    Copyright infringements

On the part of OpenAI: It is possible that OpenAI is committing copyright infringements because the use and evaluation of third-party sources is carried out without permission. However, the legal situation is still unclear and court decisions are required to provide clarity.

On the part of ChatGPT users: When using the answers created, users do not commit any copyright infringements. When sending original texts within prompts, copyrights can be violated because the texts are sent to OpenAI without the consent of the authors.

However, control and enforcement of copyrights are currently still problematic in this context.

    Plagiarism detection and independence

Brief conclusion: Plagiarism detection software cannot identify the texts created by ChatGPT, even software like GPTZero is not able to do so. The Plagiarism detection software can only provide certain clues, but this is not sufficient.

Texts created by ChatGPT, as already mentioned in the "Copyright" section, do not constitute plagiarism in themselves. However, they are not an independent achievement if students simply adopt them without making their own efforts to clarify and improve them.

    Ghostwriting problems are not new!

AI tools such as ChatGPT and Jasper are able to generate good texts and outlines. However, it is important to understand that the problem of ghostwriting existed before ChatGPT was released, for example through so-called essay mills. ChatGPT now simply makes such support more widely available. Therefore, it is crucial to take a closer look at students' performance in presenting their work results. This will help to determine whether students have actually written the paper themselves and have a sound knowledge of the subject matter.

Dealing with AI in higher education

AI cannot be ignored in today's digitalized world, so students must learn how to use this technology. Appropriate guidance from the university is required. Good students may be able to achieve better results by using AI. However, this may lead to a widening of the gap with lower-performing students.

    Regulations and guidelines

Universities often have unclear regulations for the use of ChatGPT in teaching. Monitoring and enforcing rules and guidelines is difficult. However, AI tools such as ChatGPT could be considered recognized tools in certain subjects, similar to calculators and MATLAB, if they serve as a source of inspiration and are named as such.
